Gisborne Montessori School is a small, non-denominational, independent school, providing primary and pre primary education in accordance with the philosophies of Dr Maria Montessori. It is one of 5 independent Montessori schools in Victoria currently holding primary registration as well as an early childhood education (pre-school) license.  It is the only Montessori primary school in Victoria that is purpose built on sustainable principles.

Gisborne Montessori School is nestled at the foot of Mt Macedon and is set on a 10 acre site on Barringo Road. The School is within walking distance from Gisborne station. New Gisborne is a picturesque country town graced with tree lined streets forty five minutes from Melbourne.

Vision

The School’s Vision:   Creating a peaceful, sustainable future through the empowerment of individual potential.

Is achieved through:
the implementation of the Montessori principles across the school
the involvement of parents and other community members in the schools program
provision of an environmentally conscious learning environment
encouraging independent learners to practice making appropriate choices with the knowledge that they are taking responsibility for their choices

Respect for self, each other, the community and the environment are core values of the Gisborne Montessori School.

GMS aims to provide learning environments that will:
enhance a child’s willingness to learn
develop focus, concentration and curiosity in the child
promote individualism and use of initiative
provide a safe and encouraging experience for the child
build the child’s self esteem
develop the cognitive and physical skills
provide nurturing social opportunities
preserve the child’s imagination and creativity

At Gisborne Montessori School we actively empower your children by encouraging, facilitating and guiding their development to allow each child to reach their own potential.

Environmental and sustainability principles are at the heart of the design and construction of the school learning landscape and these principles are embedded in the curriculum.

At Gisborne Montessori School we encourage in children the skills to enable them to look within themselves for self approval and wisdom.

“One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child itself.” Dr Maria Montessori

Families in our school community are drawn from many towns in the district.  Some families have relocated to the area to be closer to the School.  The sense of community is built through social functions, working bees and volunteer committees.

Students, staff and parents are involved in the wider community through participation in community events, excursions, fundraising for charities, use of local libraries, swimming pools and other local facilities.
